Whether you live in a tiny city flat or a lively family home the hallway is often the busiest part of your space. So when we set out to design our 'dream' entryway we considered a variety of needs: dog owners, babies, teenagers, musicians. The one thing that our design team has in common is that we're all Londoners where every speck of space has to work hard.
We agreed that this hardworking hallway area deserves careful consideration - it's a high use, high traffic so it needs to have highly functional furniture. But it also welcomes us, our guests and family and gives a big first impression so the entryway needs to look good too. We shot all of these images in one of our own homes with our guest of honour, Ramsey, playing his own part and thoroughly testing our new designs. This is our Vestibule collection and we hope you like it. All the pieces in the images are made of solid oak and can be customised with a choice of 6 finishes ranging from light to dark . We can also make all of these pieces in solid, American black walnut.
Firstly we all wanted this area to remind us what we need to take with us during the day: keys, umbrellas, wallets, phones & sunglasses. When we return we want a place for the stuff in our pockets, a place to put the post that we just pick up. So a surface area with some storage. We designed our Vestibule console just for this purpose. This wall mounted unit comes in two widths, the Vestibule 50cm or Vestibule 75cm and has a drawer for keys, gloves, wallets - smaller fiddly bits.
We wanted a way to charge a phone or tablet as soon as we walked in the door so we added an optional charging point. This point is a slim opening for the charging cable and the drawer has a base opening for the cable to run through to a mains outlet below. Sleek, good looking and useful.
The next thing we wanted was a place to hang coats & bags. Our Vestibule coat rack is simple, slim and strong. We thought a few extra hooks are always helpful so we designed the Vestibule hook board as well.
After that we had a few different needs - but mainly shoe storage and larger item storage - umbrellas, book bags, dog toys & leads. We designed the Vestibule bench with seat that can be used as a seat with storage underneath or Vestibule bench without seat for double storage surfaces. Baskets provided the most interesting and functional way of storing oddly shaped items from helmets to handbags & umbrellas. A variety of baskets are nice but you could keep it simple by coordinating the seat and basket colours. Have a look at our square rafia baskets for example.
The cute little seat not only looks nice and gives it balance, but also has the ability to add colour. We call it the Flip seat - it is easily removed and can be ordered in many colours. Don't want to sit down? We'll make the bench for you without the seat, providing more surface space for additional storage.
Everyone likes a mirror. It has the obvious uses of appeasing your vanity or checking there isn't spinach in your teeth before heading out. However it also has another valuable function - adding light to this area. Mirrors reflect light and are often used to make a space feel larger and more open. Our Vestibule mirror can be hung in a portrait position, as above, to fit perfectly above the narrow console. It can also be hung in a landscape position to fit perfectly above the wide console but works either way as shown in the other images.
Top off the look with one of our doormats. Not only do they look great, they are inviting and allow another opportunity to introduce colour.
It's not rocket science and we don't guarantee it's life changing but it will certainly make coming and going calmer, more organised and give bags of style to your hallway! Dog not included.
